VIX

VIX is the ticker symbol for the Chicago Board Options Exchange Market Volatility Index. The VIX is an indicator of what level of volatility is expected in the future and takes into account the puts and calls on the Chicago Board of Options Exchange (CBOE). VIX is a popular measure of the implied volatility of S&P 500 index options to determine the overall amount of fear in the markets. It is also known as the investor fear index or fear gauge, as investor uncertainty can lead to high market volatility through drops in prices. The VIX represents one measure of the market’s expectation of stock market volatility over the next 30 day period.
